AURORA – Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow could stop the Burmese Community of Colorado from holding its annual Burmese New Year's celebration on April 16 at Lowry Community Park.

More than 100 came out to celebrate Thingyan, or the Burmese Water Festival, which signifies the start of the new year. Patrons indulged in a variety of Burmese cuisine along with live music and traditional dances. Despite the previous days' snowfall, organizers continued with their outdoor celebration.

"There was no way we could cancel it," said Win Naing, secretary of the BCC. "We got a few phone calls (with people asking), 'Are you guys going to make it today?' We said, 'Why not? We're going to have a party today.'"

This is the seventh year the organization has hosted the celebration, but typically it's been held indoors or in restaurants.

"This is the first time we've done it in a public place," he said.

Thingyan typically falls on April 13.

This is a great event and great opportunity to meet the citizens and celebrate the tradition. I am very glad that this is happening in Colorado and hope to see more in upcoming events in the near future.
